Presentations, learning activities, and projects for the space unit of grade 6 science.
Stars and Planet Movement
This section of the space unit includes the star life cycle and the movement of the Earth around the Sun. The presentation and note guide are used in conjunction to scaffold note taking.
Earth Rotation Simulation
This simulation lab allows for students to investigate how earth revolution impacts seasons and daylight hours around the world. This lab should be completed after a brief introduction to the topic.
The Moon and Eclipses
Activities to investigate the moon and how eclipses to include. This includes content that was adapted from various sources, including NASA. There are opportunities for class discussions, videos, and small group research.
Design a Lunar Colony
In this activity, adapted from NASA's "Lunar Settlement" activity, groups of students design different survival systems for life on the moon.
Mission to Mars
Based on the NASA "Marsbound" activity, students will design a research mission to Mars. They need to consider mass, energy usage, and overall mission cost.
Celestial Community Project
In this interdisciplinary projects, students design a community on a different planet. Students will: research their planet, make a plan for human survival, create a brochure, film a tourism video, and build a prototype of their community using recyclable materials.
