Grade 12 Biology

Assignments designed to have students consider what it means to be sustainable and a resource file that includes useful documents for teachers to teach about sustainability.

Misinformation Interdisciplinary Project

This project is designed for the gene editing aspect of Grade 12 Biology. Students learn how to identify misinformation, evaluate various articles for potential misinformation, and present their findings using Science and English Language Arts skills. This project could easily be adapted for science courses at all grade levels.

Valuing Biodiversity Instructional Module

This instructional module for Unit 5 of Grade 12 biology aims to encourage students to consider how they value biodiversity and expand their knowledge surrounding Indigenous perspectives on conservation. Engaging in the unit in this way encourages students to move beyond the surface level of rote memorization and engage introspectively with their experiences of biodiversity.

Green Energy and Biodiversity Resource File

Society often praises renewable energy as a solution to pollution and the global energy crisis. In Canada, the majority of electricity is produced using moving water (National Resources Canada, 2017) but the true impact of hydroelectricity on biodiversity and evolutionary trends is often ignored. This resource file includes resources that discuss what hydroelectricity is, the negative environmental impacts of hydroelectric power, as well as articles and activities related to habitat fragmentation, genetic drift, and natural selection. These themes can be found in the Grade 12 Biology curriculum. In Unit 3: Evolutionary Theory and Biodiversity, students become familiar with how natural selection results in changes in population, how genetic variation can be altered, and how populations can become reproductively isolated (Manitoba Education, 2011).
